Turin, the Olimpic and the Champions

Known as Comunale, the Turin’s Stadio Olimpico in Italy hosted the World Cup in 1934 and, after a complete renovation, hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics. He was named Stadio Benito Mussolini in honor of the fascist leader who ruled Italy at that time, after the Second World War, was renamed Stadio Comunale Vittorio Pozzo in honor of coach of football team champion in the World Cups of 1934 and 1938 . The Comunale was used as headquarters of Juventus and Torino Calcio until 1990 when it opened the Stadio delle Alpi. (more…)

Bordeaux, the Chaban-Delmas and the Champions

The last game of  the UEFA Champions League 2009 in Bordeaux (France) to be held at the Chaban-Delmas next November 25: Bordeaux vs. Juventus.

Headquarters usual of the Girondins de Bordeaux, The Jacques Chaban-Delmas Stadium (ex-Park Lescure) was built in 1935 as a Velodrome to host the 1938 World Cup. Was the first stadium in the world to have the stands completely roofed with no pillar that would obstruct the visibility from the public and has the largest tunnel in Europe with 120 meters to the field. Had the name ‘Parc Lescure’ until 2001, but changed its name for the nearly 50 years mayor of Bordeaux, Jacques Chaban-Delmas, recently dead. (more…)

Florence, Artemio Franchi and the Champions

The Stadio Comunale Artemio Franchi in Florence (Italy) was constructed with the name of  ’Stadio Giovanni Berta’ in honor to the young Florentine fascist martyr, after the war it was renamed like ‘Stadio Comunale di Firenze’. In 1983 changed again the name to its current name ‘Stadio Artemio Franchi’ in honour of the leader of the Fiorentina and UEFA ex-President, who died in a car accident in that year.  Here, was the ‘Trap of Florence” developed in 1934 between the fascist Italy and the republican Spain.
