 Overview of Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, a World Heritage City and the capital of Galicia, is the traditional burial place of St. James and where thousands of pilgrims make their way each year. It is also famous for its age-old university.

In Santiago, be sure to take your time when you stroll through the town center, where Medieval Christianity blends with Baroque architecture. Don't miss the lovely plazas that surround the cathedral and the ancient roads to Compostela, where civil architecture has been exceptionally well preserved.

Today, pilgrims continue to arrive to Santiago the same way they did in the Middle Ages, especially in a Holy "Jacobean" Year, (when the feast of St. James the Apostle - the 25th of July - falls on a Sunday), declared an international site of tourist interest.
