>Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. With a population of 180,000, the city has a university and is an important economic center. The city's history dates back to the year 761, when the Benedictine monastery of St. Vincent was founded. In 1521 most of the city burnt down in a great fire. Later, after it was rebuilt, it suffered significant damages again in the miners' protests of 1934 and in the civil war.
The 16th-century Gothic Cathedral of Oviedo was also partially rebuilt after the civil war. It has a beautiful 82-meter tower and a lovely facade with three Gothic doors. Surrounded by ancient palaces, the cathedral dominates the plaza of Alfonso II in the heart of this historic city.
Oviedo is also a good place to enjoy the area's famous natural cider (a beverage with a low alcohol content made with apple juice).
