 Overview of Gerona/Girona

Gerona (Girona) is a city with a long history and an important cultural heritage. The city's first defense wall was built in the Roman era. It was invaded by the Muslims in the 8th century and later underwent several sieges by French troops.

It has an important historic quarter called the Barri Vell which is surrounded by the gardens of the "Paseo Arqueológico", or Archaeological avenue, and a wall. Its narrow streets include the old Jewish quarter, known as the Call, which is still preserved today.

Of its monuments, the cathedral, which has the world's widest Gothic nave, is of particular interest. The Sant Félix church, Arab Baths, Gironela Tower, the old university, Sant Pere de Galligants church, and Sant Nicolau church which is now the main building of the Archaeological museum, are also of note.

Another place of interest is the "Dehesa", a park created in 1850 which measures 40 hectares in area. It is located in the heart of the city and there is a market in the park every Tuesday and Saturday. Girona is a modern city that offers all kinds of services and first-rate facilities. In recent years it has experienced a lot of growth, in part, due to the university. There are many festivals, cultural activities and entertainment options in the town throughout the year.
